Whenever we write a nonfiction book, we always end up with a LOT more material on hand than ends up in the book! Here are more Chinese New Year crafts and activities that didn't make it into Karen's book, Chinese New Year Crafts.

Nianhua - New year's prints

Colorful prints with traditional good luck symbols are common decorations for the New Year celebrations. Try this simple method of making a reverse block print.

What you will need:

  • Styrofoam meat tray or any flat piece of Styrofoam
  • Dull pencil
  • Scrap paper
  • Newspaper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Black tempera paint
  • Wide brush
  • Red or yellow construction paper
  1. Cut the rim off of the meat tray so that you have a flat piece of Styrofoam.
  2. Cut a piece of scrap paper the size of the Styrofoam. Draw a simple picture on the paper. One design popular in the countryside is the Kitchen God, who symbolized blessings. You could also draw fish (abundance), bats (good luck), dragons (power), butterflies (long life), or happy children. Keep the design very simple so that it will print well.
  3. Tape the drawing to the Styrofoam. Use a dull pencil to trace the lines so that the lines are scored in the Styrofoam.
  4. Remove the paper. Go over the lines with a dull pencil to make them deep and wide.
  5. Do a test print. Spread newspapers on your working surface to protect it. Use a wide brush to spread black tempera paint evenly over the Styrofoam.Turn the Styrofoam painted-side down onto a piece of newspaper. Rub firmly on the back of the Styrofoam. Lift slowly. If the print doesn't look the way you want it, wash the foam and re-score the lines that aren't clear.
  6. When the test prints look nice, make prints on red or yellow construction paper. Let dry and hang up. If you like, you can decorate the prints with other colors of tempera paint.
Fireworks picture

Make a memory of Chinese New Year fireworks with these glittery pictures, or use them as decorations during the New Year holiday.

What you will need:

  • Black construction paper
  • Glitter glue, glitter pens, or sparkle gel pens
  • Pictures of fireworks
  1. Look at pictures of real fireworks going off to see the shapes that they make.
  2. Using glitter glue, glitter pens, or gel pens, draw the shapes of fireworks on the black paper. Use different colors in the same big bursts just like real fireworks.
  3. If you like, add dots of silver glitter or ink to make stars in the night sky.
  4. Let the picture dry, then hang up for a decoration.
Chinese shuttlecock

Shuttlecock has been a popular game in China for many centuries. It is one of the games that Chinese children and adults may play during the New Year celebrations. Shuttlecocks are often made with feathers, but you can make your own version from paper.

What you will need:

  • 2 pieces of tissue paper, 8 x 12 inches
  • A small weight such as: 4 washers, 4 quarters, a small rubber ball, a small rock
  • Yarn
  • Pencil
  • Ruler
  • Scissors
  1. Stack the two pieces of tissue paper on top of one another. Fold in half lengthwise.
  2. Use the ruler and a pencil to draw a line 1 inch from the fold.
  3. Make cuts about 1/2 inch apart from the unfolded edge to the pencil line. This makes a row of fringes.
  4. Unfold the paper carefully and spread the fringes out on either side of the fold.
  5. Place the weight at one end of the fold. Carefully roll the paper up in the direction of the fold around the weight.
  6. Gather all the fringes together in one bunch. Tie with yarn just above the weight.
  7. To play, kick the shuttlecock with your feet to keep it in the air. You can play alone, or with other players. If you play with others, work together to keep the shuttlecock in the air as long as possible.
